The Ducati Paso occupies a fascinating place in motorcycle history. It was not Ducati’s biggest commercial success, nor was it the fastest sport bike of its era, yet few motorcycles from the 1980s were as visually distinctive or as important to the company’s design evolution. Tamburini had previously been involved with Bimota and would later become famous for machines such as the Ducati 916 and MV Agusta F4. With the Paso, he created something that was not simply another Ducati sports motorcycle; it was an attempt to redefine what a Ducati road bike could look and feel like.

The Story Behind the Ducati Paso

A Motorcycle Named After Renzo Pasolini

The name Paso was chosen as a tribute to Italian racing rider Renzo Pasolini, who was widely known by the nickname “Paso.” Pasolini was born in Rimini and died in a racing accident at Monza in 1973. Naming Ducati’s new motorcycle after him gave the project a strong emotional connection with Italian motorcycle racing while also linking it to the culture surrounding Ducati’s home country.

The production motorcycle was unveiled after its appearance at the 1985 Milan Motorcycle Show and entered production as the 750 Paso in 1986. It immediately attracted attention because its appearance was so different from the conventional sports motorcycles of the period. Rather than relying on a visible tubular frame, exposed engine and traditional separate body panels, the Paso used an unusually complete fairing that visually unified the front, fuel tank and side sections of the motorcycle.

That styling decision was more than a cosmetic exercise. Ducati and Cagiva were attempting to create a modern sports-touring machine capable of appealing beyond the company’s traditional audience. At the time, Japanese manufacturers were producing extremely competitive four-cylinder motorcycles, and Ducati needed something distinctive enough to stand apart. The Paso was certainly distinctive.

Massimo Tamburini’s Radical Design

The most recognizable characteristic of the original Paso is its full bodywork. The fairing was remarkably comprehensive for its time, hiding much of the mechanical structure and giving the motorcycle an almost futuristic appearance. Ducati notes that the 750 Paso was among the early road motorcycles to adopt such extensive full fairing, while its design became an important symbol of Ducati’s arrival on the industrial-design stage.

The motorcycle also broke with Ducati’s established chassis traditions. Instead of the classic tubular trellis-type construction that would later become synonymous with Ducati, the Paso used a steel double-cradle frame with square-section tubing. Because the bodywork concealed much of the chassis, the unconventional construction was not immediately obvious to casual observers. The rear suspension used a progressive linkage arrangement, while the front employed sophisticated Marzocchi equipment.

This was a particularly interesting engineering choice because the Paso was designed as a complete package. Its designers were not simply taking an existing Ducati engine and placing it into a fashionable new body. Frame, suspension, wheels, brakes and bodywork were developed around the idea of producing a modern, comfortable and aerodynamic sporting motorcycle.

Engine and Performance

At the heart of the original motorcycle was Ducati’s familiar 90-degree V-twin, an engine configuration that Ducati traditionally called an L-twin. The 748 cc air-cooled, desmodromic engine used an 88 mm bore and 61.5 mm stroke, with power figures generally quoted at around 72 horsepower. A five-speed gearbox transmitted power through the final chain drive.

On paper, these numbers made the Paso a serious sporting motorcycle, but they also revealed one of its major challenges. The mid-1980s were an intensely competitive period, and Japanese manufacturers were offering highly powerful 750 cc four-cylinder motorcycles. Contemporary buyers could therefore purchase machines that delivered more outright performance for less money. The Paso’s strengths were different: its character, design, handling and exclusivity were central to its appeal.

One of the most controversial mechanical decisions was the use of an automotive-style Weber carburettor. The system was intended to feed both cylinders while working with the unusual reversed rear-cylinder arrangement, but it developed a reputation for difficult low-speed behavior and tuning problems. Period and retrospective accounts describe issues involving fuel delivery, flat spots, throttle response and the fuel pump.

This is one of the reasons the Paso is such an interesting classic today. The motorcycle was technologically ambitious, but some of those ambitions were not completely successful. Its flaws are part of its story rather than something that can simply be separated from the machine.

Chassis, Wheels and Brakes

The Paso’s chassis was equally unconventional. The original 750 used 16-inch wheels, which contributed to its distinctive proportions and handling characteristics. At the front was a Marzocchi fork, while the rear featured progressive suspension. Braking came from twin front discs and a rear disc, with Brembo components playing an important role in providing stopping power.

The combination of a relatively low seat and comprehensive bodywork helped make the Paso more accessible as a sporting road motorcycle than its aggressive appearance might suggest. Contemporary descriptions of the chassis emphasize its ability to combine sporting riding with longer-distance usability, which fits Ducati’s original intention for the machine.

From 750 Paso to Paso 906

More Displacement and Liquid Cooling

Ducati recognized that the original Paso needed more performance, and the answer came in the form of the Paso 906. Introduced for the late 1980s, the 906 replaced the 750 with a substantially enlarged 904 cc engine. The new engine adopted liquid cooling, while the gearbox gained a sixth ratio. Power rose to approximately 88 horsepower and top speed increased to around 220 km/h.

The move to liquid cooling was an important development because it represented a significant modernization of the Paso’s mechanical package. The 906 retained much of the original motorcycle’s basic philosophy and styling, but the larger engine gave it the performance that the 750 had struggled to deliver against increasingly powerful competitors.

Unfortunately, the larger engine did not completely solve the motorcycle’s problems. The Weber carburettor remained, and the electrical system continued to be a point of concern for owners. In other words, Ducati had improved the performance envelope without completely eliminating the practical weaknesses of the earlier design.

The 907 i.e.: The Paso Reaches Maturity

Electronic Fuel Injection Changes Everything

The final stage of the Paso story arrived with the Ducati 907 i.e. The motorcycle was introduced in the early 1990s and, interestingly, no longer officially carried the Paso name. Nevertheless, it is widely regarded as the final evolution of the Paso concept. The biggest improvement was the replacement of the Weber carburettor with Weber-Marelli electronic fuel injection and integrated electronic engine management.

The effect was significant. The 904 cc liquid-cooled L-twin remained, but power increased to approximately 90 horsepower, while claimed maximum speed rose to roughly 230 km/h. The fuel-injection system also transformed the motorcycle’s drivability, addressing one of the most persistent criticisms of the carburetted versions.

The chassis evolved as well. The 907 i.e. adopted 17-inch wheels instead of the 16-inch wheels used by the earlier Pasos. This change brought the motorcycle closer to the wheel and tire dimensions that would become standard for high-performance road bikes and improved its stability and handling characteristics.

The 907 i.e. therefore represents the mature version of the concept. It retained the extraordinary styling of Tamburini’s original design while incorporating mechanical improvements that made the motorcycle substantially easier to live with.

Why the Ducati Paso Matters

The commercial story of the Paso was disappointing compared with Ducati’s later successes. Approximately 4,863 examples of the 750 were produced, followed by around 1,802 Paso 906 motorcycles and roughly 2,303 examples of the 907 i.e. Those numbers are modest, but they help explain why the Paso has become an intriguing collector motorcycle.

Its greater importance lies in what it represented. The Paso showed that Ducati was willing to experiment with design, chassis architecture and motorcycle packaging. Its completely enclosed bodywork anticipated a styling direction that influenced other motorcycles within the Cagiva group, including the Cagiva Freccia and Moto Morini Dart.

The motorcycle also provided an early demonstration of Massimo Tamburini’s design philosophy. His ability to combine flowing bodywork with purposeful mechanical architecture would become enormously influential later in his career. Looking back, the Paso can therefore be viewed not merely as an unusual 1980s Ducati but as an important chapter in the evolution toward the spectacular Ducati sport bikes of the 1990s.

Ducati Paso as a Modern Classic

Today, the Paso appeals to riders and collectors for precisely the reasons that once made it difficult to sell. It does not look like every other classic Ducati, and it does not conform to the usual image of an old Italian motorcycle. Its enclosed bodywork gives it a distinctive silhouette, while the Ducati L-twin provides the mechanical personality enthusiasts expect.

Buying or restoring one, however, requires an understanding of its age and its particular engineering characteristics. The carburetted 750 and 906 deserve careful attention to fuel-system condition, electrical components and correct carburettor setup. A well-maintained example can be rewarding, but a neglected motorcycle can quickly become a restoration project. The 907 i.e. has the advantage of electronic fuel injection and represents the most developed version of the platform, although age-related electrical, fuel-system and mechanical issues naturally remain relevant with any motorcycle now several decades old.

For collectors, originality can also be important. The Paso’s unusual styling is its greatest visual asset, so an untouched or sympathetically restored example can have considerable appeal. The model has moved beyond simply being an old used motorcycle and has entered the realm of historically interesting Italian design.

The Ducati Paso was never destined to become the sales phenomenon Ducati might have hoped for, but commercial success is only one way of measuring a motorcycle’s importance. The Paso was an experiment in design, engineering and identity at a crucial point in Ducati’s history.
