KrAZ-214: The Soviet 6×6 Truck Built for the Toughest Roads
The KrAZ-214 was one of the most important heavy off-road trucks developed in the Soviet Union during the post-war period. The Origins of the KrAZ-214
From YaAZ to KrAZ
The roots of the KrAZ-214 go back to the early 1950s, when Soviet engineers were working on a new generation of heavy trucks capable of replacing older wartime designs. The post-war Soviet Union had enormous requirements for transportation equipment, particularly for the armed forces, construction, oil and gas exploration, forestry and heavy industry. A truck intended for these roles needed to carry substantial loads while also being capable of operating where paved roads were absent or unreliable.
The resulting YaAZ-214 was conceived as a large three-axle all-wheel-drive truck. It shared much of its engineering heritage with the YaAZ-210 family but was specifically developed for demanding off-road work. Unlike a conventional 6×4 truck, the 6×6 arrangement meant that all three axles could contribute to propulsion, substantially improving traction when the vehicle encountered mud, sand or snow. The concept was sufficiently successful that the truck was retained when production moved to Kremenchug.

A Genuine 6×6 Workhorse

Power came from the YaAZ-M206B, a 6.97-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine. One of its most unusual characteristics was that it was a two-stroke diesel, a technology that was used in several Soviet heavy-truck engines of the period. The engine developed approximately 205 hp at 2,000 rpm, with maximum torque reported at roughly 765 Nm at 1,300 rpm in commonly cited specifications.
For a modern truck enthusiast, the idea of powering a heavy 6×6 with a 7.0-liter two-stroke six-cylinder engine may seem unusual, but the engine’s operating philosophy suited the truck’s mission. It was designed to provide strong low-speed pulling power rather than high-speed performance. The relatively low engine speed and substantial torque allowed the KrAZ-214 to move heavy loads through difficult terrain while maintaining manageable gearing.
The engine also had a distinctive mechanical character. The large displacement, two-stroke operating cycle and substantial cooling requirements contributed to the truck’s unmistakable sound and appearance. It was not a refined powerplant in the modern sense, but it was engineered around the practical requirements of a heavy Soviet vehicle.
Designed for Heavy Loads
The KrAZ-214’s engine was especially important because the truck itself was substantial. Commonly listed specifications put the vehicle’s unladen mass at around 12.3 tonnes, while its nominal payload was approximately 7 tonnes. The result was a vehicle with a gross weight approaching 20 tonnes when fully loaded.
The combination of a large engine and six driven wheels meant that the truck could also perform heavy towing duties. The KrAZ-214 was reportedly intended to tow trailers with masses reaching tens of tonnes under appropriate conditions, which made it valuable for military and engineering applications.
Transmission and Driveline
The KrAZ-214 used a five-speed manual transmission, combined with a transfer case that provided additional reduction. This arrangement gave the driver a broad range of gearing for different operating conditions. High ratios were useful when traveling on firm roads, while lower gearing allowed the truck to crawl through difficult terrain or move heavy equipment at controlled speeds.
The drivetrain was built around durability rather than refinement. The truck’s axles used reduction gearing, while the 6×6 system allowed the engine’s torque to reach all three axles. Built to Leave the Pavement
The KrAZ-214 was designed from the beginning to operate away from paved roads. Its suspension used leaf springs, while the chassis was built to tolerate considerable loads and twisting forces. The three-axle layout distributed weight over a large footprint and helped the truck remain stable when carrying heavy equipment.
Large single tyres were another important part of the design. Historical specifications identify 15.00-20 tyres on all axles for early examples. Artillery and Logistics
The Soviet armed forces were among the most important users of the KrAZ-214. Its combination of payload, all-wheel drive and towing capability made it particularly useful for transporting artillery crews and equipment. A heavy artillery tractor based on the chassis could move guns and their crews over difficult terrain, while cargo versions could transport ammunition, fuel and supplies.
This military role explains why the KrAZ-214 is often remembered more as an army truck than as a civilian commercial vehicle. Although civilian industries also used it, a substantial portion of production was directed toward military requirements.

The PMP Pontoon Bridge
One of the most famous applications of the KrAZ-214 was as a carrier for the PMP pontoon bridge system. The vehicle’s six-wheel drive and substantial payload made it well suited to transporting bridge sections and associated equipment to locations where military engineers needed to establish crossings.
This role illustrates why the truck’s off-road capability mattered so much. A bridge system is most urgently required precisely where normal infrastructure is missing or damaged. The vehicle transporting the bridge therefore needed to reach rivers and obstacles under conditions where conventional cargo trucks might fail. The KrAZ-214 provided that mobility while carrying a substantial load.
Beyond the Military
Although military service was central to the KrAZ-214’s identity, the truck also found important civilian applications. Oil and gas exploration was one particularly significant field. Soviet exploration teams frequently worked in remote regions with limited road infrastructure, making a heavy 6×6 truck extremely valuable.
The truck was also used in construction, heavy transport and industrial operations. Specialized versions and bodies could transform the basic chassis into a mobile workshop, tanker, engineering vehicle or other piece of equipment. The KrAZ-214B
A More Refined Version
The KrAZ-214 was eventually updated into the KrAZ-214B, introduced during the early 1960s. The modernization included improvements to the suspension and a transition to a 24-volt electrical system. Series production of the 214B continued until 1967.
The 214B was not a completely new truck. Instead, it represented the natural evolution of a proven platform. Improvements could be introduced without abandoning the basic chassis, engine concept or 6×6 layout that had already demonstrated its usefulness.
This approach also gave KrAZ valuable experience in refining heavy all-terrain vehicles. The lessons learned from the 214 family contributed to the development of later models, particularly the KrAZ-255 series that would become one of the most recognizable Soviet off-road trucks.
The Road to the KrAZ-255
The end of KrAZ-214 production did not mean the end of its engineering philosophy. In 1967, the KrAZ-255B entered production, becoming the successor to the 214 family. The newer truck retained the essential idea of a heavy 6×6 vehicle but introduced a substantially different powertrain and further chassis development.
The 255 became famous for its enormous low-pressure tyres and exceptional off-road capability, earning a much wider reputation than the earlier 214. Yet the relationship between the two models is important. The KrAZ-214 demonstrated that there was a continuing requirement for a heavy 6×6 truck capable of carrying significant loads into remote areas, and the 255 refined that formula for a new generation.

Why the KrAZ-214 Was So Important
The importance of the KrAZ-214 lies in the combination of its engineering and historical circumstances. It arrived at a time when the Soviet Union was modernizing its transportation infrastructure and military logistics while also expanding industrial activity into increasingly remote areas.
A truck such as the KrAZ-214 offered something that smaller vehicles could not: a large payload combined with genuine all-terrain mobility.
