The Ducati 999 is one of the most fascinating superbikes in Ducati’s history. Braking performance was another major strength. The standard 999 uses twin 320 mm front discs with four-piston calipers and a 240 mm rear disc with a two-piston caliper.
Combined with the relatively compact dimensions and committed riding position, the braking system gives the 999 the serious, focused character expected from a contemporary superbike. There is little about the motorcycle that feels designed merely for relaxed transportation. Even its ergonomics and chassis communicate the machine’s sporting intentions.
What Is the Ducati 999 Like to Ride?
The riding experience is perhaps where the 999 makes the most sense. Its appearance can be debated endlessly, but once moving, the motorcycle’s purpose becomes obvious. The low, forward-oriented riding position, strong V-twin torque and responsive chassis create an experience that feels much closer to a race-bred machine than an ordinary road motorcycle.
The 999’s 1,420 mm wheelbase and relatively aggressive steering geometry help create a balance between stability and agility. The motorcycle is planted enough to inspire confidence at speed while remaining responsive when the rider changes direction. Its 120/70 ZR17 front and 190/50 ZR17 rear tires were typical of the superbike class of the era.
The engine is equally important to the experience. The 102 Nm peak torque figure arrives at 8,000 rpm, giving the rider substantial drive through the middle and upper portions of the rev range. Unlike a motorcycle that needs to be kept permanently at the top of its rev range, the Ducati’s twin-cylinder character makes it rewarding to ride using the engine’s torque as well as its peak power.
Of course, the 999 is not the easiest motorcycle for every rider. The riding position is aggressive, the engine can feel demanding at low speeds and the bike’s character rewards smooth, deliberate inputs. The strongest argument for the Ducati 999 was never its appearance; it was its performance on the racetrack. The factory 999 made an immediate impact in the 2003 World Superbike Championship. Ducati’s official historical record states that Neil Hodgson won the championship that year after an extraordinary season, while the 999 dominated the championship’s results.
Hodgson was followed by James Toseland, who won the 2004 World Superbike title aboard the 999. Troy Bayliss then brought another championship to Ducati with the model in 2006. Ducati identifies these three championships as Hodgson in 2003, Toseland in 2004 and Bayliss in 2006.
