This is another area where the diesel makes particular sense. Its 550 Nm of torque is available at relatively low engine speeds, making it well suited to pulling heavy loads. The PHEV is also capable of towing up to 2,500 kg, but its much greater kerb weight and hybrid characteristics mean that the diesel remains the more natural long-distance towing choice.
Which Engine Should You Choose?
3.3 e-Skyactiv D Six-Cylinder Diesel
For many used buyers, the 3.3-litre diesel is the most interesting engine in the CX-80 range. It is an inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 254 PS and 550 Nm. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Mazda’s technical data gives the engine a displacement of 3,283 cc and a maximum torque range of 1,500–2,400 rpm.
This is a particularly appealing combination for drivers who cover substantial annual mileage. The six-cylinder layout is smooth, quiet and unusual in a European family SUV, while the substantial torque means that the CX-80 never feels short of pulling power. Official combined consumption is around 5.7–5.8 l/100 km in the technical documentation, depending on the specification.
The main warning is that modern diesel technology rewards the right type of use. If your driving consists almost entirely of short urban journeys, a large diesel SUV is unlikely to be the ideal choice. Buyers should ask how the previous owner used the vehicle rather than assuming that a low odometer reading automatically means a better car. Long motorway journeys are far more appropriate for this powertrain.
The six-cylinder diesel also means that the CX-80 feels more expensive to run when maintenance, tyres and drivetrain components are considered. A used example should therefore have a complete service history and, ideally, evidence of regular servicing through the Mazda network.
2.5 e-Skyactiv PHEV
The alternative is the 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv PHEV, which combines a four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. Total system output is 327 PS and 500 Nm, making the PHEV the more powerful of the two launch powertrains. It uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
The PHEV’s headline numbers are impressive. Mazda quotes 0–100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and an electric range of approximately 60 km under the original European specification. ADAC lists a 61 km WLTP electric range for a representative PHEV version.
For the right owner, this can make the CX-80 surprisingly economical. If you can charge at home every night and most of your daily journeys are short, much of your driving can be completed using electric power. On longer journeys, the petrol engine provides the necessary range without requiring charging stops.
The opposite is also true. If you cannot charge regularly, the PHEV loses much of its advantage. Carrying a large battery and electric hardware adds weight, so there is little reason to choose the plug-in hybrid purely because its official laboratory fuel-consumption figure is extremely low. Those figures assume regular charging and a particular test cycle.
What Problems Should You Check on a Used CX-80?
Early Software and Electronic Issues
Perhaps the most important consideration when buying a used CX-80 is its age. Early cars were among the first examples of Mazda’s new large-vehicle architecture, and reliability data is therefore still developing. CarGurus notes that the model is too new for extensive real-world owner reliability statistics, although Mazda as a brand performed reasonably well in broader reliability surveys.
That makes the car’s service and software history extremely important. That does not mean every CX-80 behaves this way, but it is a good reason to test a prospective purchase on several different types of road rather than taking a five-minute dealership drive.

The CX-80 has a relatively firm character, and some owners and reviewers have criticized the rear suspension for being insufficiently damped over certain surfaces. Which Mazda CX-80 Should You Buy Used?
For a driver covering high annual mileage, the 3.3-litre diesel would be my preferred choice. It combines the CX-80’s unusual six-cylinder character with excellent low-speed torque and strong long-distance efficiency. It is particularly attractive for motorway users and anyone who regularly tows.
For a family that can charge at home, the 2.5 PHEV is arguably the more versatile choice. Its 327 PS output makes it extremely quick for a seven-seat SUV, while its electric range can cover a large proportion of normal daily driving. The key is having access to regular charging.
Regardless of engine, I would put condition and software history ahead of trim level. A lower-specification CX-80 with a clean history, completed updates and careful previous ownership is a better purchase than a heavily equipped example that has been neglected.
What Should You Do Before Buying?
Because the CX-80 is still a relatively young vehicle, a professional inspection may seem excessive when buying a nearly new example, but it can still be worthwhile. Start by obtaining the vehicle’s VIN and asking a Mazda dealer to check its service and campaign history. Verify that all recalls and software updates have been completed.
Then inspect the bodywork, wheels and tyres and check underneath the car for damage. On PHEV models, test the charging system and make sure the vehicle can begin and complete a charge correctly. Examine the dashboard for warning messages and test every electronic system you can.
Finally, take an extended test drive. Try urban traffic, low-speed manoeuvres, rough roads and motorway speeds. Pay particular attention to the gearbox, suspension and the transition between electric and combustion power on PHEV models. If anything feels unusual, have it investigated before signing the purchase contract.
Mazda CX-80 as a Used Car: Final Verdict
The Mazda CX-80 is a fascinating used-car proposition because it offers something that increasingly few manufacturers provide: a large, seven-seat SUV with a smooth six-cylinder diesel engine, a substantial plug-in hybrid alternative and a strong emphasis on driving character. It is spacious, capable of towing 2,500 kg and available with an interior that feels considerably more special than many mainstream family SUVs.
It is not without weaknesses. Early examples need particularly careful checking because the model is new and technically ambitious. The ride can be firm, some PHEV owners have reported imperfect powertrain integration, and there is not yet enough long-term data to give the CX-80 the same reliability confidence as a mature model such as the CX-5.
Nevertheless, a carefully selected CX-80 could be an excellent used family car. The diesel is the logical choice for long-distance drivers, while the PHEV makes more sense for owners who can charge regularly. Above all, buy based on history rather than equipment: confirm software updates, inspect the car thoroughly and choose an example that has been properly maintained.
For buyers prepared to do that homework, the CX-80 offers an appealing combination of space, refinement, performance and individuality.
