SMS Westfalen: The German Dreadnought That Fought at Jutland

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the battleship was the ultimate expression of national power. Britain and Germany were engaged in an intense naval rivalry, and the arrival of HMS Dreadnought in 1906 transformed the competition almost overnight. Germany responded with a new generation of all-big-gun battleships, beginning with the Nassau class. Among these ships was SMS Westfalen, a powerful vessel that became one of the principal fighting ships of the Imperial German Navy during the First World War.

Westfalen was the second ship of the four-vessel Nassau class, following Nassau and preceding Rheinland and Posen. She was built by AG Weser at Bremen, laid down on 12 August 1907, launched on 1 July 1908, and commissioned into the Imperial German Navy in November 1909. Although her design was already somewhat conservative compared with contemporary British battleships, she combined heavy firepower with exceptionally strong protection. Her twelve 28 cm guns, arranged in six twin turrets, gave her a formidable broadside, while her heavily armored hull was designed to survive the punishment expected in a fleet engagement.

Her career would take her from peacetime fleet exercises to the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Riga, the largest battleship engagement of the First World War, and ultimately the aftermath of Germany’s defeat. Westfalen never became as famous as some of the later German battleships, but her wartime record makes her an important example of the first generation of German dreadnoughts.

The Birth of a German Dreadnought

The Nassau class emerged from Germany’s determination to remain competitive in the rapidly changing battleship race. German naval planners had already been studying large battleship designs before Dreadnought appeared, but the British ship’s revolutionary combination of heavy guns and turbine propulsion made existing battleship designs appear outdated. Germany consequently accelerated its move toward an all-big-gun battleship fleet.

The Nassau design was not a simple copy of Dreadnought. German engineers made different choices concerning propulsion, armor, internal subdivision, and gun arrangement. The resulting ship was broader and heavily protected, while retaining three triple-expansion steam engines instead of the steam turbines used aboard Dreadnought. The four Nassau-class ships were therefore something of a transitional design: they were unmistakably dreadnoughts because of their uniform heavy main battery, but they incorporated several conservative features inherited from earlier German battleship construction.

Westfalen was laid down at AG Weser on 12 August 1907. Her construction reflected the enormous industrial effort required to build a modern battleship. She was approximately 146.1 meters long and 26.9 meters wide, giving her a relatively broad hull. She displaced roughly 18,873 tons under design conditions and more than 20,500 tons at maximum displacement. When she entered service in 1909, she represented a significant increase in size and capability over Germany’s previous pre-dreadnought battleships.

An Unusual Battleship Design

The Hexagonal Gun Arrangement

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Westfalen was the arrangement of her main battery. She carried twelve 28 cm SK L/45 guns in six twin turrets. One turret was positioned toward the bow and another toward the stern on the centerline, while four additional turrets were placed on the sides of the ship in a distinctive hexagonal pattern.

This arrangement gave Westfalen an impressive total of twelve heavy guns, but it was not as efficient as the centerline turret layouts adopted by later battleships. Only eight of the twelve guns could be brought to bear in a conventional broadside. Contemporary observers and later naval historians consequently identified the turret arrangement as one of the principal weaknesses of the Nassau design. A 1917 assessment of the German battleships specifically noted that, despite carrying two more main guns than HMS Dreadnought, the Nassau-class ships could bring only the same number to bear on a broadside.

Nevertheless, the 28 cm guns were powerful weapons for their era, and Westfalen supplemented them with twelve 15 cm guns and sixteen 8.8 cm weapons. Six submerged 45 cm torpedo tubes provided an additional offensive capability. This combination allowed the ship to engage enemy battleships at long range while retaining substantial firepower against cruisers, destroyers, and other smaller targets.

Armor and Survivability

If the main battery represented Westfalen‘s offensive strength, armor was arguably the defining characteristic of her defensive philosophy. The main belt was approximately 300 mm thick in its strongest sections, while the gun turrets had armor reaching about 280 mm. The ship’s conning tower was protected by exceptionally heavy armor, reported at up to 400 mm, while the torpedo bulkhead was approximately 30 mm thick.

The German approach placed great emphasis on internal protection and subdivision. The broad hull provided space for a layered defensive system intended to limit the spread of flooding and damage. This was consistent with a wider German battleship philosophy in which survivability was given considerable importance.

The result was a warship that was not exceptionally fast by dreadnought standards but could withstand significant punishment. Westfalen‘s maximum speed was approximately 20.2 knots, produced by three triple-expansion engines supplied by twelve water-tube boilers. Her machinery developed approximately 22,000 horsepower.

Service Before the First World War

After entering service in 1909, Westfalen joined the High Seas Fleet and became part of Germany’s principal battle force. Her early career consisted primarily of training exercises, fleet maneuvers, and preparations for the possibility of a major naval conflict with Britain.

These years were important because the German Navy was learning how to operate increasingly large numbers of modern capital ships together. Battleships had to maneuver as coordinated formations, maintain formation under difficult conditions, communicate with other vessels, and operate alongside cruisers and destroyers. The training conducted before 1914 would become crucial once the fleet entered wartime service.

The strategic situation changed dramatically in August 1914 when Germany entered the First World War. The Royal Navy possessed a substantial numerical advantage, so the German High Seas Fleet generally avoided risking its entire battle force against the British Grand Fleet unless circumstances were favorable. Instead, German naval strategy involved fleet sorties, reconnaissance operations, bombardments, and attempts to draw portions of the British fleet into battle under advantageous conditions.

Westfalen became a regular participant in these operations, spending much of the war in the North Sea. She also took part in German operations in the Baltic, demonstrating the flexibility expected from a major battleship.

The Gulf of Riga Campaign

One of Westfalen‘s important wartime assignments came during the Battle of the Gulf of Riga in August 1915. German naval forces attempted to enter the Gulf of Riga, defeat Russian naval forces operating there, and support German military operations on the Eastern Front. The operation involved battleships, cruisers, destroyers, minesweepers, and other vessels.

Operating a large battleship in the Baltic presented different challenges from fighting in the open North Sea. Mines, narrow passages, coastal batteries, and shallow waters could all threaten a capital ship. Naval power had to be coordinated with minesweeping and reconnaissance rather than simply relying on the superior guns and armor of the battleships.

Westfalen participated in the German Baltic operations and subsequently returned to the North Sea. Her deployment demonstrated that the Nassau-class battleships could be used beyond the main theater of the High Seas Fleet, although their size and draft naturally imposed limitations on operations in restricted waters.

Germany’s Greatest Naval Battle

The defining episode of Westfalen‘s combat career was the Battle of Jutland, fought on 31 May and 1 June 1916. The battle brought the German High Seas Fleet and British Grand Fleet together in the largest surface engagement of the First World War.

Westfalen was part of the German battle line and became particularly important during the confused nighttime fighting that followed the main daylight engagement. The German fleet was attempting to return to its bases while British light forces operated aggressively around the withdrawing formation. In the darkness, visibility was poor, identification was difficult, and destroyers and cruisers could suddenly appear at close range.

Westfalen was heavily involved in this night fighting. She led portions of the German line during the engagement and fired on British light forces. Her heavy armor and substantial secondary battery were particularly valuable in these conditions, where encounters could occur at much shorter distances than the long-range exchanges between battleships earlier in the battle.

The Nassau-class battleships’ role at Jutland was significant because they were among the older dreadnoughts in the German fleet, yet they remained capable of operating alongside the newer König and Kaiser-class battleships. Their powerful armor made them useful in situations where a ship might be exposed to repeated gunfire or torpedo threats.

Jutland ultimately ended without the decisive destruction of either fleet. Germany inflicted heavier losses on the British during the engagement, but the Royal Navy retained control of the North Sea. The German High Seas Fleet remained a dangerous force, but it would not again achieve a fleet engagement on the same scale.

Torpedo Damage and Later Operations

After Jutland, Westfalen continued to operate with the High Seas Fleet. During another German fleet advance in August 1916, she was struck by a torpedo fired by the British submarine HMS E23. The damage forced the battleship to withdraw for repairs, demonstrating that even a heavily armored dreadnought remained vulnerable to underwater attack.

This vulnerability was increasingly important as the war progressed. Battleships were not simply threatened by enemy battleships; submarines, mines, destroyers, and aircraft were becoming increasingly important elements of naval warfare. A vessel like Westfalen, designed primarily for fleet combat against other surface warships, had to operate within an increasingly complex and dangerous environment.

In 1918, Westfalen was again deployed to the Baltic. During the Finnish Civil War she supported the German intervention on behalf of the White Finns, showing once more how German battleships could be used as instruments of political and military power even outside the main North Sea theater.

The End of SMS Westfalen

The final months of the First World War brought the German Imperial Navy to the brink of collapse. Following the armistice in November 1918, Germany’s fleet was subjected to the restrictions imposed by the peace settlement. Unlike many of the newest German battleships, Westfalen did not remain at Scapa Flow with the main interned force.

The situation changed dramatically in June 1919 when the German ships at Scapa Flow were scuttled by their crews. The Allies subsequently required replacement vessels, and Westfalen was eventually ceded to Britain as one of those replacements. She was struck from the German naval register on 5 November 1919.

Her postwar career was brief. She was taken to Britain and ultimately sold for scrap. The former German dreadnought was dismantled at Birkenhead, with the process completed in 1924. After only about a decade of active service, one of Germany’s pioneering dreadnoughts had disappeared from the world’s naval fleets.

The Legacy of SMS Westfalen

SMS Westfalen is important because she represents the beginning of Germany’s dreadnought era and the dramatic transformation of naval warfare before the First World War. She was built in response to a technological revolution that had made the traditional pre-dreadnought battleship obsolete, yet her own design would soon be surpassed by more advanced German ships carrying larger guns, improved propulsion, and more efficient turret arrangements.

Her career also demonstrates the particular characteristics of German naval construction. Westfalen was not the fastest battleship of her generation, and her 28 cm guns were smaller than those carried by several contemporary British and later German battleships. Her unusual hexagonal turret arrangement also limited the number of guns that could fire in a broadside. Yet these disadvantages were balanced by a strong emphasis on armor, internal protection, and structural resilience.

Most importantly, Westfalen was a genuine combat veteran. She served in the Baltic, operated repeatedly in the North Sea, fought at Jutland, endured torpedo damage, and remained active until the final stages of the war. Her story therefore provides a valuable window into the operational reality of the Imperial German Navy rather than merely its prewar ambitions.

Today, SMS Westfalen is remembered as one of the four ships that formed Germany’s first dreadnought class. Her career was overshadowed by later and more famous German battleships, but she helped establish the foundation upon which those later ships were built. From her launch in 1908 to her scrapping in 1924, Westfalen witnessed an extraordinary period in naval history: the rise of the dreadnought, the clash of the High Seas Fleet and Grand Fleet, and the disappearance of the Imperial German Navy after the First World War.

SMS Westfalen was ultimately a product of a fascinating moment in naval history. She was born from Germany’s response to the dreadnought revolution, carried a remarkably heavy and unconventional main battery, and relied on armor and internal protection to compensate for some of the limitations of her design. Her participation in Jutland and other wartime operations demonstrated that the first German dreadnoughts were more than experimental responses to Britain’s naval challenge: they were capable frontline warships that fought in one of history’s most important naval conflicts. Although Westfalen disappeared into the shipbreaker’s yard only a few years after the First World War, her career remains an essential chapter in the story of Germany’s Imperial Navy and the short, turbulent age of the early dreadnought battleship.
