The 450 R/T employed a five-speed gearbox with a multiplate wet clutch. Power reached the rear wheel through a chain final drive, while primary transmission was handled by helical gears.
One of the defining characteristics of the motorcycle was its relatively low overall gearing. This was extremely useful in the environment for which the R/T was best suited. Tight trails, steep climbs, rough ground and technical sections rewarded the ability to maintain control at low speeds while exploiting the strong torque of the single-cylinder engine.
The disadvantage was equally apparent when the motorcycle was taken onto faster terrain. Contemporary testing found that the gearing was too low to exploit the full breadth of the engine’s power at higher speeds. Braking was considerably more traditional than the engine technology. Both ends used drum brakes, with 158mm drums specified for the front and rear. By today’s standards these dimensions and braking systems appear modest, but they were appropriate to the motorcycle’s period and intended use.

Cycle World found the Ducati particularly effective as a trail motorcycle, highlighting its quick steering, manageable slow-speed behavior, wide handlebars and strong ground clearance. The publication also noted that its gearing and engine braking made steep climbs and descents comparatively easy to manage.
The motorcycle’s biggest strengths therefore appeared when speed was relatively low. In woods, gullies, muddy sections and technical trails, the combination of a strong single-cylinder engine, low gearing and responsive steering could make the Ducati highly entertaining.
At higher speeds, however, the character changed. The quick steering and relatively high riding position could make the motorcycle nervous on rough, fast surfaces.
