Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant
Kashiwazaki-Kariwa is currently the most powerful nuclear power plant in the world. The well-known Tepco (Tokyo Electric Power Company) operates it on the coast of the Sea of Japan in Niigata Prefecture.
It is currently out of service and its operator is seeking certification from Japan’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority. The reason for the shutdown is the need to improve protection and resilience during earthquakes, which are unfortunately likely in this area. After the Fukushima accident, the criteria are even stricter.
