USS Oscar Austin (DDG-79): An Arleigh Burke Flight IIA Destroyer

USS Oscar Austin (DDG-79) is the first Flight IIA variant of the Arleigh Burke–class guided-missile destroyers in the United States Navy. Commissioned on 19 August 2000, she combines Aegis air-and-missile defense, anti-surface and anti-submarine capabilities, and advanced command-and-control functions in a single multi-mission platform.

Design and Construction

Namesake and Honors

Oscar Austin is named for Private First Class Oscar P. Austin, USMC, a Medal of Honor recipient who sacrificed his life in Vietnam by shielding a wounded comrade from a grenade. His courage and devotion to duty set the example for the ship’s motto, “Honor and Sacrifice”.

Keel Laying, Launch and Commissioning

Built by Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, the ship’s keel was laid on 9 October 1997. She was launched and christened on 7 November 1998 and delivered to the Navy after sea trials. Oscar Austin officially entered service on 19 August 2000 at Norfolk, Virginia, where she joined Destroyer Squadron 26 before shifting homeport to Rota, Spain.

Structural Enhancements

Flight IIA destroyers feature a 4 ft 6 in hull extension over previous Burkes, adding approximately 900 tons of displacement and accommodating enhanced systems and hangar space. Oscar Austin can sustain speeds in excess of 30 knots and sprint at over 32 knots when required. At an economical cruising speed of 20 knots, she can transit roughly 4,400 nautical miles without refueling. The gas-turbine configuration allows extended deployments with quick engineering repairs at sea.

Combat Systems and Armament

Aegis Combat System and Vertical Launch

Central to her combat suite is the Aegis Baseline 7 combat system powered by the AN/SPY-1D multi-function radar. Two Mk 41 vertical launching system (VLS) modules (32 cells forward, 64 cells aft) accommodate Standard SM-2/SM-6 air-defense missiles, SM-3 BMD interceptors, ESSM, RUM-139 VLA-ASROC anti-submarine rockets and BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Surface and Close-In Weapons

A single 5 in/54 caliber Mk 45 Mod 2 gun provides naval gunfire support and surface engagements. Point-defense systems include two 20 mm Phalanx CIWS mounts, four .50 cal machine guns, and two Mk 38 25 mm gun systems for asymmetric threats.

Torpedo and ASW Warfare

Two Mk 32 triple torpedo-tube launchers fire Mk 46, Mk 50 or Mk 54 lightweight torpedoes against hostile submarines. Hull-mounted sonar and towed-array sensors feed the ASW fire-control suite, enabling coordinated pursuit with embarked SH-60R helicopters.

Sensors and Electronic Warfare

Radar and Sonar Suites

Oscar Austin relies on the AN/SPY-1D phased-array radar for simultaneous air and surface tracking. Secondary radars (AN/SPS-67 surface search, AN/SPS-73 navigation) support situational awareness. Sonar capabilities include AN/SQS-53C hull array and AN/SQR-19 towed-array systems for long-range submarine detection.

Electronic-Support and Countermeasures

Her electronic-warfare suite (AN/SLQ-32(V)3) provides detection and jamming of hostile radars. Anti-torpedo decoys (SLQ-25 Nixie), SRBOC chaff/flare launchers and Nulka active decoys create layered defenses against incoming threats.

The ship’s complement of 380 includes officers, enlisted technicians and aviation personnel. Berthing modules feature personal storage, improved lighting and climate control. Common areas include modern mess decks, a wardroom, and fitness and recreation lounges to maintain crew welfare on extended patrols.

Integrated console-based trainers in combat and engineering spaces allow watch teams to rehearse scenarios underway. Automated machinery-control systems reduce manual monitoring, freeing sailors for tactical duties and maintaining high readiness levels.

Operational History

Maiden Deployments

Oscar Austin’s first deployment in late 2002 took her to the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf, supporting opening strikes of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Subsequent rotations in 2005-06 and 2007-08 saw her continue multi-theater presence in support of strategic and maritime-security operations.

Forward Presence and Exercises

Homeported at Rota, Spain since 2024, she integrates with NATO and allied navies across the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Participating in BALTOPS, Formidable Shield and joint ASW drills, Oscar Austin demonstrates the flexibility and responsiveness of the Flight IIA destroyer force.

Modernization and Upgrades

Under the DDG Modernization Program, the ship has received Aegis Baseline 9 upgrades for enhanced BMD capability, new communication suites, and improved power-management systems. Planned enhancements include Naval Strike Missile integration and advanced unmanned-systems interfaces to address evolving threats.
