At the center of the 860 GT was an 863.9 cc air-cooled 90-degree L-twin. Bore and stroke measured approximately 86.0 × 74.4 mm, giving the engine a relatively large bore compared with its stroke. The architecture remained SOHC with two valves per cylinder, and each camshaft was driven by Ducati’s characteristic bevel-gear system.
Unlike the later high-performance Ducati Super Sport engines, the 860 GT used conventional valve springs rather than desmodromic valve actuation. The motorcycle appeared alongside the much more exotic 750 Super Sport, a model that had already developed an enormous reputation among enthusiasts. The 860 GT’s conservative GT mission and angular design therefore struggled to generate the same emotional response.
