SMS Elsass: The Story of Germany’s Forgotten Pre-Dreadnought Battleship
SMS Elsass was one of the last major pre-dreadnought battleships constructed for the Imperial German Navy before the revolutionary arrival of HMS Dreadnought transformed naval warfare. The adoption of the 28 cm weapon was possible because Krupp had developed a suitable quick-firing heavy naval gun, allowing German designers to increase the main battery’s striking power.
Her secondary battery consisted of fourteen 17 cm SK L/40 guns. Mobilization in 1914

Although they were no match for the newest dreadnoughts in a major fleet engagement, they still possessed sufficient armor and firepower to perform useful duties.
