SMS Sachsen (1916): The Unfinished Bayern-Class Battleship

The SMS Sachsen was one of the most ambitious battleships constructed for the Imperial German Navy during the First World War, yet she never fired a shot in anger. Construction of SMS Sachsen

From Naval Program to Wartime Project

Sachsen was ordered under the provisional contract name Ersatz Kaiser Friedrich III, and her construction was assigned to Friedrich Krupp Germaniawerft at Kiel. Her keel was laid down on 15 April 1914, only a few months before the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand triggered the political crisis that ultimately led to the First World War. She was subsequently launched on 21 November 1916 and named after the Kingdom of Saxony.

Her construction was substantially affected by the war. German shipyards were under enormous pressure to maintain existing warships while simultaneously producing submarines, destroyers, minesweepers, and other vessels needed for immediate operations. The strategic importance of U-boats increased particularly after the Battle of Jutland, when Germany increasingly turned toward submarine warfare as its principal means of challenging Britain’s maritime position. Consequently, resources that might have been devoted to completing Sachsen were diverted to projects considered more immediately valuable.

By the time construction was halted, Sachsen was approximately nine months short of completion. This was a striking situation for such a large and expensive vessel. The hull had already been launched, and much of the ship’s structure existed, but critical machinery and equipment remained unfinished. Design and Dimensions

A Larger Hull for Heavier Guns

Sachsen was approximately 182.4 meters long and 30 meters wide, making her substantially larger than the preceding König-class battleships. Her design displacement was approximately 28,800 metric tons, while full-load displacement has been given as roughly 32,500 tons. Her draft was approximately 9.3 to 9.4 meters. These dimensions provided sufficient volume for her heavier main battery, larger machinery installation, additional protection, and substantial ammunition and fuel supplies.

The increase in size was not simply a matter of prestige. A modern battleship’s displacement had to accommodate a complex balance between guns, armor, machinery, fuel, ammunition, crew facilities, and underwater protection. Increasing the caliber of the main guns required heavier turrets and ammunition-handling equipment, while maintaining a useful speed demanded additional machinery power. The 38 cm Main Battery

Eight Heavy Guns

The defining feature of Sachsen was her planned main armament of eight 38 cm SK L/45 guns mounted in four twin turrets. Two turrets were positioned forward and two aft, allowing the ship to concentrate her firepower in traditional superfiring pairs. The 38 cm weapon represented a major increase in shell weight and destructive potential compared with the 30.5 cm guns of the König class.

The move to 38 cm artillery reflected a broader international trend toward larger battleship guns. Heavy-caliber weapons offered greater penetration and destructive power at long range, provided that the ship could accurately determine range and maintain effective fire control. In a hypothetical fleet engagement, Sachsen’s eight guns would have given her a powerful broadside capable of challenging heavily armored enemy battleships.

The arrangement was also relatively conservative compared with the König class. Rather than retaining the latter’s unusual five-turret, ten-gun configuration, Bayern-class designers returned to four twin turrets. This reduced the number of individual guns but increased the caliber considerably. The design consequently emphasized the quality and destructive power of individual shells rather than simply maximizing the number of barrels.

Secondary Armament

Sachsen was planned to carry sixteen 15 cm SK L/45 guns as her secondary battery. These weapons were intended to engage cruisers, destroyers, torpedo craft, and other targets that did not justify expenditure of the main battery’s heavy ammunition. The design also included 8.8 cm guns, with wartime sources generally listing four weapons in the planned configuration. Five submerged torpedo tubes were to provide an additional offensive capability.

The secondary battery was important because a battleship could not rely entirely on its enormous main guns. Torpedo-armed destroyers represented a serious threat, particularly during nighttime operations or when a battle line was maneuvering at close range. The smaller guns were therefore an essential component of the ship’s defensive system.

Because Sachsen never reached completion, however, some details of her final operational armament remained theoretical. The war was already causing modifications to the weapons fit of completed ships, particularly as the threat from aircraft increased. Had Sachsen entered service, her light anti-aircraft and small-caliber armament might have evolved during wartime.

The Innovative Propulsion System

A Diesel Engine at the Center

Perhaps the most technically interesting aspect of Sachsen was her propulsion arrangement. Unlike the completed Bayern and Baden, which used conventional steam-turbine propulsion, Sachsen was designed with two steam turbines and one large diesel engine, with each machinery unit driving one of the ship’s three propeller shafts.

The diesel engine was intended primarily for economical cruising. A large diesel could consume fuel more efficiently than steam turbines when a ship was traveling at relatively low speeds, potentially giving Sachsen an advantage during long periods of routine cruising. The turbines, meanwhile, could provide the high power necessary when the battleship needed to reach combat speed.

The planned diesel engine was a six-cylinder, two-stroke design associated with MAN technology, with an intended output of approximately 12,000 horsepower. Its development was complicated, however, and the machinery was not ready in time to allow Sachsen to enter service. This was one of several technical and industrial challenges that contributed to the difficulty of completing the ship during wartime.

Armor and Protection

Designed for Survival

Like other major German battleships, Sachsen placed considerable emphasis on armor protection. Her main belt was designed to reach approximately 350 mm in its thickest areas. The armor scheme extended to the gun turrets, barbettes, decks, conning tower, casemates, and internal protective structures. Published specifications give turret armor of up to 350 mm and conning-tower protection reaching approximately 400 mm.

The protection of the conning tower was especially substantial because this was the central position from which the commanding officers could direct the ship during battle. Heavy armor was intended to protect the personnel and equipment responsible for controlling the vessel even while it was under concentrated enemy fire.

Sachsen’s underwater protection was equally significant. Battleship designers increasingly recognized that mines and torpedoes could be more dangerous than gunfire because an underwater explosion could cause severe flooding and structural damage. The Bayern-class design therefore incorporated extensive internal subdivision and an armored torpedo bulkhead intended to limit the spread of damage.

The armor scheme represented a careful compromise. Every additional ton of armor increased the ship’s displacement, and every increase in displacement required more machinery to maintain speed. What Happened to Sachsen During the War?

Construction Slows

The outbreak of the First World War did not immediately stop work on Sachsen, but it transformed the circumstances under which the ship was being built. German shipyards increasingly struggled with shortages of skilled workers and strategic materials. Naval construction was reorganized around vessels that could contribute directly to the war effort, especially submarines.

Sachsen was launched in November 1916, but launching a battleship was only one stage of construction. Yet the war demonstrated that industrial capacity could be just as decisive as technical design.
