Soviet industry was expanding, transportation requirements were increasing and truck operators wanted greater payload capacity and improved performance. GAZ therefore began developing a new family of medium-duty trucks that would eventually produce both the GAZ-52 and GAZ-53.

The new vehicles retained the basic philosophy of the GAZ-51 but introduced a substantially more modern cab and chassis. Development work involved numerous prototypes during the second half of the 1950s, and the final design featured a wheelbase of approximately 3,700 mm, considerably longer than the 3,300-mm wheelbase of the older GAZ-51. The longer chassis provided additional space for the cargo body and created a platform that could accommodate a higher payload.

The GAZ-53 was conceived as the heavier member of this new family. The First GAZ-53F

Production constraints meant that early examples used a development of the older GAZ-51 six-cylinder petrol engine, producing roughly 75–82 horsepower depending on specification.

The 53F was therefore something of a transitional model. The new chassis and cab were ready, but the new V8 engine was not yet available in sufficient quantities. Why Low Compression Mattered

The relatively low compression ratio of the engine was not an accident. Soviet truck operators often had to work with fuel of inconsistent quality, particularly in remote areas. A highly stressed engine requiring premium fuel would have been impractical for many applications. The GAZ-53’s engine was designed with a degree of tolerance for the realities of Soviet fuel supply. Four-Speed Manual Gearbox

The GAZ-53 used a four-speed manual transmission with one reverse gear. The gearbox was related to the transmission used in the GAZ-51 and GAZ-52, but it incorporated synchronizers for third and fourth gears. Conventional 4×2 Layout

The ride could be rough, particularly when the cargo bed was empty, but this was considered an acceptable compromise for a truck whose primary purpose was carrying goods.

Four Tonnes of Payload

The most important development in the GAZ-53 story came with the GAZ-53A, which entered mass production in 1965. The model received a reinforced chassis and front axle along with other improvements, while its rated payload increased to approximately four tonnes.

The increase in payload transformed the truck’s usefulness. A four-tonne medium-duty truck could perform a huge range of transportation jobs, from agricultural haulage to construction and industrial delivery. It was still considerably smaller and easier to maneuver than heavy Soviet trucks such as the ZIL-130, but it could transport significantly more than the earlier GAZ-51.

The truck’s grille has distinctive vertical openings, while the direction indicators on many versions sit above the headlamps.
