What Is the Mazda BT-50 Like to Drive?

One of the BT-50’s strengths is that it generally feels more manageable on the road than its size suggests. The second-generation model was specifically engineered with SUV-like ride and handling characteristics in mind, with Mazda describing the development goal as a more passenger-car-like driving experience while retaining the durability and rough-road capability expected of a pickup.

Nevertheless, prospective buyers should remember that a BT-50 remains a pickup. Its ladder-frame chassis, leaf-spring rear suspension and high ground clearance are useful when carrying loads and travelling off-road, but an empty pickup will never ride exactly like a conventional hatchback or crossover. The most important advice is to buy the individual vehicle, not just the model. A carefully maintained BT-50 with documented servicing, an unmodified drivetrain and evidence of sensible use can be a very good purchase. Conversely, a heavily modified, poorly maintained pickup with an uncertain history can become expensive regardless of how attractive the asking price appears.
